Minimum residence period

7 years

Preliminary indication only. The permit type, income and other criteria, exemptions and documents are checked by the Citizenship Directorate. Special categories have specific legal definitions.

How the estimate works

The general residence period is seven continuous lawful years. Some defined categories use three years; holders of other non-temporary residence titles may use a twelve-year route.

Citizenship can also be acquired through other procedures, such as descent or specific birth and schooling routes. This calculator does not assess those cases.

Choose the route that matches your circumstances and enter completed years of continuous lawful residence.

Meeting the time period alone does not establish eligibility. The Interior Ministry also checks residence-title, income, language, knowledge and other statutory requirements. The naturalisation knowledge exam fee is €150.

Frequently asked questions

Does meeting the years mean I can apply?

No. The residence permit type and other legal conditions also apply. Ask the Citizenship Directorate to confirm your route.

Is the knowledge exam fee included in an application?

The €150 exam fee is separate. Application fees and exceptions may depend on the legal route.
