VIES (VAT Information Exchange System)
In short
The EU service that checks whether a VAT number from another EU country is valid.
VIES asks the database of the VAT number's country and shows whether the number is valid. It is used for cross-border business sales.
A negative result does not always prove the number is wrong. In doubtful cases, contact your tax office.
