Work out platform commission, VAT and margin using the rate you actually agreed — not an average.
Platforms publish no public rate card. Percentages depend on the contract, on whether the platform delivers, and on exclusivity. That is why the commission is your input.
Next to each platform we show the range reported in the press, with its year and source, as orientation rather than a quote.
Net revenue: the order value is divided by 1 + the food rate to remove the VAT that is remitted. Commission (excluding VAT) is then subtracted.
Margin: food and packaging costs, as you entered them, are subtracted from net revenue. Fixed costs are not included.
on commission is calculated separately because a business that can reclaim it offsets it.
Example: an order of €20 ( included), a 27% commission (the low end of the 27–30% range reported for small independent businesses in 2024), variable costs of 35% of the order value (food, packaging, consumables), 400 orders a month, and 13% VAT on food.
Net food value: €20 ÷ 1.13 = €17.70. Commission: €20 × 27% = €5.40. Variable costs: €20 × 35% = €7.00. Contribution per order: €17.70 − €5.40 − €7.00 = €5.30, a margin of 29.94% of net food value.
Over 400 orders that is about €2,120 a month, or about €25,436 a year. The commission's (€1.30 per order) is shown but not deducted from the contribution.
Because there is no public rate card. Press reports give 27–30% for small restaurants in 2024, but the platforms say the high rates apply only to some service packages. The right number is the one in your contract.
Wolt's Greek marketplace addendum applies commission to the -inclusive price, after merchant-funded discounts. For efood and Box no public document sets this out, so the tool uses the same base and states that as an assumption.
